Academic challenges of nursing PHD students: A Systematic Review

چکیده :

Background and Objective Pursuing a PhD in nursing is a rigorous and rewarding endeavor, but it also presents a variety of academic challenges. Here’s an overview of some common challenges faced by nursing PhD students. Methods We conducted a comprehensive search using electronic databases and hand reference checks. The Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, CINHAL, EMBASE, and web of science were searched from 2015 until 2024. All terms related to Academic challenges of nursing PHD students were used to conduct the search. We adopted a checklist from the critical appraisal skills program checklist for diagnostic studies to assess the quality of the included studies. Results We identified 107 records, of which 44 were selected for full-text review. Following methodological examination and quality assessment, 14 studies were included in narrative data synthesis. The most frequently key factors in Academic challenges of nursing PHD students included : Research Demands(Complexity of Research Design, Data Collection and Analysis), Time Management(Balancing Responsibilities, Procrastination and Burnout), Academic Writing(High Standards for Publication, Dissertation Writing), Navigating Academia (Advisor Relationships, Networking and Collaboration), Financial Strain (Funding Challenges, Opportunity Costs), Personal and Emotional Challenges (Isolation, Imposter Syndrome), Integration of Clinical Practice and Research (Bridging Theory and Practice, Translating Research into Practice). To navigate these academic challenges successfully, nursing PhD students can consider the following strategies: Seek Support, Develop Time Management Skills, Engage in Professional Development, Prioritize Self-Care and Participate in Networking Opportunities. Conclusions While pursuing a PhD in nursing presents various academic challenges, these obstacles can be overcome with the right support systems, effective strategies, and personal resilience. Successfully navigating these challenges ultimately contributes to the development of skilled nurse researchers who can advance the field of nursing and improve patient care.
